On the 9th January, as part of her cabinet reshuffle, Theresa May made Margot James the new digital minister, replacing Matt Hancock who himself was promoted to Secretary of State.
Despite only being in the job since 2016, Matt Hancock was seen within the technical industry as a safe pair of hands, most recently leading the introduction of a green paper on internet safety, pressing for greater investment in broadband and proposing a code of practice for social media.
His replacement, Margot James, appears to be a good choice too, having spent 18 months as the small business minister in the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. Her entrepreneurial credentials are also solid, having been a co-founder of the PR and clinical trials business Shire Health Group (which was bought by WPP Group in 2004).
Improving broadband speeds for UK businesses and increasing FDI in the British tech sector are two key priorities for the government, both of which will keep Ms James very busy in 2018.
