Our unique history

We've built our reputation helping hundreds of organisations like yours leave behind reactive systems and processes while keeping pace with an ever-changing threat landscape.

With over 20 years of experience at the forefront of technology developments, this is our company story:

  • 1999

    The beginning

David Barker, our founder and CTO, began 4D off the back of designing websites which then needed to be hosted somewhere. Over the years 4D Hosting (as 4D was called then) expanded into domain registration, shared hosting, dedicated servers and resold colocation.

  • 2002

    Using other data centres

4D expanded from reselling shared hosting services into running its own server platforms within the RedBus data centres. 4D started offering managed hosting as well as dedicated servers to rent and small-scale shared colocation.

  • 2004

    Birth of the network

4D registered for its ASN (31463) which allowed us to start operating our own BGP network and peer on exchanges. Expansion of rackspace in RedBus into 4D’s own suite and taking space in other data centres (IXEurope) led to the first full rack colocation customers using 4D network services. Ethernet and xDSL services were also offered.

  • 2007

    Our first data centre

With investment from Keith Bedell-Pearce and Jack Bedell-Pearce joining the company, 4D opened its first owned data centre. This realised an ambitious goal of David’s developed from the frustrating lack of the support and value offered by other data centre operators.

  • 2012

    Eco-friendly services

We won Green Datacentre Project of the Year category at the Datacentre Solutions Awards ceremony thanks, in part, to launching the UK’s largest evaporative cooling system the year before.

  • 2015

    Expanding our services

David and Jack oversaw the launch of our public and private cloud platforms - a completely flexible solution allowing customers to purchase only the cloud storage they need with extremely cost-effective pricing.

  • 2016

    Our growth

With David and Jack running the Byfleet data centre over the last ten years, the business had grown. It was time to expand and we opened a larger, second data centre in Gatwick able to support higher power densities of up to 41 kW per rack.

    Where we're going

We continue to provide excellent colocation, cloud, connectivity and cyber security services to a growing list of companies. As well as expanding the number of HPC racks we host, helping companies utilise this new generation of computing technology.

We also keep a close eye on quantum computing, 5G and other future technologies, to ensure our customers are always given industry-leading solutions.

4D Awards

4D is committed to utilising industry-leading technologies. Among these, we’ve deployed sophisticated cooling systems in our data centres, including adiabatic cooling towers. This high-capacity cooling allows us to host HPC infrastructure, and they’re also highly energy-efficient, leading to us winning ‘Best Energy Efficiency Project of the Year’ from the DCS awards and ‘Project of the Year’ at the Electrical Review Awards. This energy-efficiency also helps in our drive to be eco-friendly, and you can learn more about our Eco Credentials here.
