Enterprise MPLS

MPL what?

MPLS stands for ‘Multi Protocol Label Switching’.  Unfortunately the unabbreviated version doesn’t offer any more of a clue as to what it means over the abbreviation itself, which is why we’re here to help.

In short, MPLS can do two very clever tricks.  Firstly it can prioritise certain types of data over other types of data which are less mission-critical to a business. Uploading pictures of the company Christmas party to Facebook by someone in HR is probably less important than a VoIP telephone call to the Chairman in New York - especially if it’s explaining the contents of said photos. MPLS gives priority to the call and whatever other data is deemed more important, according to your specifications. This makes your network faster where it needs to be fast and more efficient overall.

The second thing MPLS is great at is re-routing data quickly when necessary and connecting lots of different sites seamlessly.  An office setup on one of our enterprise MPLS networks for example wouldn’t notice any changes at all when the cleaner accidentally unplugged a router for the vacuum. Within 50 milliseconds the traffic would be re-routed over a different path and the office wouldn’t even notice there’d been a ‘network issue’.
